Microsoft to Release SHA-2 Update for Windows 7 Next Month: How It Affects Your Security

Starting in July 2020, there will no longer be optional, non-security releases (known as "C" releases) for this operating system. Operating systems in extended support have only cumulative monthly security updates (known as the "B" or Update Tuesday release).

To improve security protections for customers, Microsoft provides vulnerability information to major security software providers in advance of each monthly security update release. Security software providers can then use this vulnerability information to provide updated protections to customers via their security software or devices, such as antivirus, network-based intrusion detection systems, or host-based intrusion prevention systems. To determine whether active protections are available from security software providers, please visit the active protections websites provided by program partners, listed in Microsoft Active Protections Program (MAPP) Partners.

Starting with version 58, Drive for desktop will be rolling out a change that impacts macOS users over the next few releases. This update adds support for File Provider, a feature introduced by Apple in macOS 12.3 which provides native support for accessing cloud-based file systems like Google Drive. These changes will not impact the core capabilities of Drive for desktop but users will notice some slight changes in the functionality of the product.

-us/topic/2019-sha-2-code-signing-support-requirement-for-windows-and-wsus-64d1c82d-31ee-c273-3930-69a4cde8e64f suggests that KB4474419 is required for sha-2 support on Windows 7, but that doesn't explicitly talk about application installers, only Windows updates. Statements like those noted in comment 28 also suggest that KB4474419 is required. But I can't find anything that explicitly says, "your app installer won't work on Windows 7 unless KB4474419 is installed".

Release Note Request (optional, but appreciated)[Why is this notable]:There is concern that some older, unpatched Windows 7 users may require a Windows hot fix to continue using Firefox updates (lots of discussion above); let's make the fix obvious.[Affects Firefox for Android]:[Suggested wording]:Beginning in this release, the Firefox installer for Windows is signed with a SHA-256 digest, rather than SHA-1. Update KB4474419 is required for successful installation on a computer running the Microsoft Windows 7 operating system. For more details about this update, visit the Microsoft technical support website ( -us/help/4474419/sha-2-code-signing-support-update).[Links (documentation, blog post, etc)]:

On April 14, 2009, Windows XP exited mainstream support and entered the extended support phase; Microsoft continued to provide security updates every month for Windows XP, however, free technical support, warranty claims, and design changes were no longer being offered. Extended support ended on April 8, 2014, over 12 years after the release of Windows XP; normally Microsoft products have a support life cycle of only 10 years.[118] Beyond the final security updates released on April 8, no more security patches or support information are provided for XP free-of-charge; "critical patches" will still be created, and made available only to customers subscribing to a paid "Custom Support" plan.[119] As it is a Windows component, all versions of Internet Explorer for Windows XP also became unsupported.[120]

Deep Security Manager 11.0 supports the Deep Security Agents on the operating systems shown in the table below. If platform support was added in an update release, the minimum update version is noted next to the check mark in the table.
